PROJECT 2: SHOOTING PRACTICE & EDITING
This project consists of 4 parts:
- Framing Exercise
- Lalin 30-second edit
- Music Video
- Production Shooting
30-SECOND MUSIC VIDEO
In groups of 3, we are to shoot a 30-second music video and edit it. We
are required to include 7 types of shots:
- Wide shot (high angle)
- Wide shot (eye-level)
- Wide shot (low angle)
- Medium shot
- Medium close-up
- Close-up
- Extreme close-up
My group members Ayshan, Laila, and me decided to choose a song that's
quite laid back and chill so it doesn't involve so much dancing aha. We
selected Leave the Door Open (Bruno Mars & Silk Sonic), and use a simple step from their other song Smoking Out The Window.
We learn to create a split screen on Premier Pro for this exercise. The
part we selected to do our dance is marked in white as shown below:
I divided all the shots into the rest of the lines and shot everything at
home. We also learned how to apply LUTs and so I proceeded to add one into
an adjustment layer over my clips.
Final Outcome:
Our class is split into 2 groups. We each will get to experience what
it's like being on a production team, and have been assigned roles. My
initial role was one of the directors of photography, but since some of
our members couldn't make it on shooting day, I was part of the lighting
team. Our shooting will follow some scenes from the trailer of the Kdrama
'Happiness'.

Editing
The editing is done on Premier Pro. After finding an appropriate piece
of music to fit a trailer, I began to compile everything together. This
included syncing the audio with the video. We were also taught to use
Lumetri Scopes to do colour correcting.
Final Outcome:
Reflection
EXPERIENCE
I really enjoyed the production shooting part of this project as it was a very exciting new thing. I actually ended up enjoyed being part of the lighting team more so than my previously assigned role since I got to learn a bit about handling equipment that I hadn't used before. It was enjoyable to see everything slowly unfurl and fall into place: from our planning to shooting and editing. Overrall, I found the journey very eye-opening!
OBSERVATIONS
I tried to be patient enough to not jump straight into shooting without a proper plan during the music video part. Choosing to take some time to prep everything saved quite a bit of time and though I find it agonising to sit and plan something, it is absolutely necessary for projects like these, especially if there is field work.
FINDINGS
I've learned that everyone in a production team has a role to play, no matter how small in contributing to the end result. There are a lot of stages to making a video, which makes planning and structure extremely important to efficiently execute a production.
