Lectures

Introduction
This semester most of us were physically present in class. Mr. Martin briefed us about the module and the projects we'd be doing. We were also advised to invest in a pair of monitor headphones for sound editing. We're free to use a smartphone for filming. A tripod would also be required.

Instructions

EDITING EXERCISES
We're to edit the clips provided in Google Drive in Premier Pro. This was to get used to its interface.

EXERCISE 1:

Fig 1.2: Outcome of editing ex. 1a - Smint ad (28.08.22)

EXERCISE 2
The clips were out of order this time, so we had to figure that out while editing. This was incredibly difficult to do, and at first my friend and I had completely different results.

Here's the final order of the clips: 1, 12, 8, 15, 10, 14, 6, 17, 2, 19, 3, 20, 18, 5, 16, 13, 7, 4, 11, 9, 21

Shooting & Editing Practice (Framing)
  • We are to pair up for this exercise and shoot 5-second clips of the following framings:
  • Low-angle wide shot (WS)
  • Frontal medium close-up (MCU) - soft bg
  • Frontal medium shot (MS) - soft bg
  • Extreme close-up (ECU)
  • Side angle medium shot (MS) - soft bg
  • 3/4 angling medium close-up (MCU) - soft/blurry bg
  • Close-up (CU)
  • Eye-level medium-wide shot (MW)
I paired up with Pei Yun for this exercise. Here are the 8 resulting shots (plus a little extra).

After compiling all the clips into a sequence I liked, it was time to add the label texts. I got a basic idea of how to do this from the tutorial that was provided.

I also decided to add some music to the video - Stardew Valley: Cloud County (cover) by BlueBrewMusic

Final Outcome:

EXERCISE 3: LALIN

Fig 3.1: Provided materials

For this exercise we are required to edit the provided footage and graphics according to the given storyboard below:

Fig 3.2: Provided storyboard

We had to individually trim each of the footage before transferring them to the timeline:
  • We press [I] (In) to mark the new start of clip
  • We press [O] (out) to mark new end of clip

Additionally, we are required to use visual transitions: -
  • dip to black at the beginning and end clips
  • cross dissolve between two frames of the same character to make them disappear from frame)

Final Outcome:

EXERCISE 4 (LALIN 30 SECOND EDIT)
For the next part of this exercise we were required to trim Lalin to 30 seconds sharp. This was to exercise using ripple edit.

Final Outcome:

EXERCISE 5 ( W4)
This week we had a practice session for our project 2 production shooting. During the session, we learned how to set camera equipment, sound recording, and direction.
I compiled the result of our audio and video together below:

EXERCISE 6 (W11)
We learned about storyboarding in our lecture in preparation for our final project. To put our knowledge to practice, we were required to break down this clip :

Final Outcome:

Reflection
I felt very excited about this module, and the exercises we had certainly made it easier for me to get accustomed to Premier Pro in particular, which I had never used before. This made all our projects less overwhelming and easy to navigate.
