Instructions

Week 1 (12/01/23)

FLIP 1.1 (Group): Types of Infographics
Present slides in your blog that shows the different types of infographic + the kind of information they’re applicable for + an example for each identified type.

FLIP 1.2 (Individual): Infographic Redesign
Pick one free online infographic tool and re-design 1 poorly constructed infographic poster. Present a before and after comparison, and your personal rating + review of online tool used for:
  • difficulty, intuitiveness
  • usefulness
  • design templates, choices
Selected infographic:
A quick search on Google lead me to an article titled "The Top 10 Worst Infographics ever created". I selected #3: Win an Ipad.

At first glance, it was unclear to me what this infographic is even about. The darkened images just made it all the more hilarious. Looking at the content, the iPad draw is the main event, and everything else is supposed to be filler info used to build up to the grand giveaway (a very sketchy one at that). While I think the concept is creative, a proper flow to the info presentation is very much needed for its intended humor to become apparent. Otherwise, the idea is lost on the reader.

Redesigning on Canva
I decided to use portrait orientation for the redesign. After browsing through some templates, I made slight changes to the selected one and filled in the information, as well as adding new graphics. The logo has been omitted as the company apparently doesn't exist anymore? (Was it even real in the first place T-T).

Added an extra element into the template since I wanted to separate a part of the content and
increase its visibility. (Merely making the font bold didn't provide the contrast I needed).

RATING CANVA
1. Difficulty/ Intuitiveness: 8/10
I am relatively new at using Canva, however found it extremely easy to find my way around it. The interface is not too overwhelming, and in fact seems pretty straightforward to learn.

2. Usefulness: 9/10
Canva has quite a big library of resources for fonts, graphics, images, etc. This makes it so easy to to cook up a polished design within a short amount of time. It's no wonder so many people use it.

3. Design templates/ choices: 7/10
As iterated earlier, there's a lot of resources and choice options, including design templates. It's not too hard to find something to suit your needs. However if you're looking for something reallly specific, a little more browsing is required as a lot of it is not free.

Week 2 (19/01/23)

FLIP 2: Saul Wurman's L.A.T.C.H.
In our groups, we are to present an explanation on the topic and provide examples/scenarios of what information best utilized with each principle.

Practical 1: Motion Graphics
The song chosen for this practical is So What by P!nk (ah takes me back). The kinetic typography will be made for the lyrical verses:
So, so what?
I'm still a rock star

We learned to animate text and utilise null objects on After Effects.

Week 3 (26/01/23)

FLIP 3: Saul Wurman's L.A.T.C.H.
In our groups, we are to present an explanation on the topic and explain and show examples of how chunking can be effectively used in poster design, as well as in UI/UX.

Week 4 (02/02/23)

FLIP 4: Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto
In our groups, we are to present the different ways that data can be visualised (the 9 directives), and provide and explain good and bad examples in an infographic.

Exercises

Exercise 1: Quantify and Visualise Data
I decided to use a pack of M&M's for this exercise.

Fig: Mini M&M's
I first separated and sorted the pieces into their colours. Afterwards, I arranged them to follow the order of a rainbow before trying different compositions.

Once I found a composition I liked, I labelled the diagram.
