EXPERIENCE
This semester was certainly a lot more creatively open-ended and exploratory than last semester, which has definitely been enjoyable. I did however fall behind pretty early on as I dwelled on the typographic systems far longer than what was expected. Personally this semester has felt like a race to catch up for me, so I couldn't savour the creative freedom we had as much as I'd have liked. I'm sad that I missed out on feedback for most of the semester because I was so behind on everything. I relied on Mr. Vinod's feedback to others' and his general feedback to gauge my work, which was invaluable and helped me a lot. I'd imagine it would've been even more so if I had worked in a more timely manner to ask for specific feedback. However, I am glad that I didn't completely give up in the face of difficult times, as typography has been most fruitful in sensitising me to nuance and detail.
OBSERVATION
While typography is detail-oriented by nature, I observed that I was often plagued with indecision towards the smallest of things. The smallest of changes appeared to have a noticeable impact. I've found that taking breaks has been extraordinarily helpful and necessary as it helps one gauge their work with a fresh eye. It took me a while to understand the manner that design principles applied to typography. It was also interesting to note that learning the rules helps one to effectively delve out into the realm of creative freedom. I had to lower the expectations I had for myself to make it through to the end of a task, but completing them to a point of 60% satisfaction felt faaar less disappointing than I'd anticipated.
FINDINGS
Typography is a central aspect of design that carries extreme social responsibility. I've learned that culture plays an equally important role as the tools used in the development of type. While not always my cup of tea, I have thoroughly enjoyed how eye-opening this module has been. Typography is definitely not my strength, but the challenge of it has helped me grow in many ways. Dabbling with the creation of a complete font in task 3 also made me reflect on the consistent effort that it may take to develop a good working font, and extend my sincerest appreciation to type designers. While the semester has ended, I know for a fact that this is no departure from typography itself, and hope to carry what I've learned throughout my journey!
